Certain operating conditions require washable casters. Strict hygiene regulations apply in hospitals and commercial kitchens. In these areas, any mobile equipment used has to be cleaned regularly. Usually cleaning is carried out under high pressure and at high temperature. If casters are not washable, they may corrode.
Properties of washable casters
Most hospitals have automatic wash systems, which operate similar to a car wash. Hospital beds, for example, are simply wheeled in, thoroughly disinfected and cleaned. To ensure that the hospital bed casters can withstand this, they are made of high-quality chrome-plated sheet steel and components made of stainless steel. Bearings, in particular, are at risk during cleaning. Hence washable casters are sealed to prevent water and cleaning agents from entering the bearing. If washable casters are used, it is important the fitting is sealed as well. This must be taken into account when the equipment is purchased and is the responsibility of the respective manufacturer.
