According to the United Nations, the global proportion of people over the age of 65 will increase to 15.6 percent by 2050. In 2010, the proportion was just under half of this. Studies also show that Europe is one of the world's oldest regions, with an average age of 39 years.
In 2016, the number of people over the age of 65 on the European continent was 115.8 million. By the year 2060, this number could rise by around 60 percent. A global comparison shows Japan as the front-runner. The studies clearly show that the proportion of people over the age of 65 in Japan could rise by over 40 percent by 2060. In the USA, the average age of the population will grow to over 40 years by 2050. In comparison: This average was still around 35 years in the year 2000.
