Safety Castors

Protecting employees and moving goods with our locking systems for castors

Whenever weight is moved, dangerous situations can emerge. Especially in the industry sector, a transport trolley that starts to move could have disastrous consequences. Once a heavy loaded trolley starts moving on its own, it is almost impossible to stop the trolley with mere human power. Depending on the speed, employees could be injured or worse. These safety issues require castors with locking systems to keep the load where it belongs and to protect employees. But which locking variants are available and how do they fit your applications? To help you decide on the right type of locking system for your application, we would like to introduce you to our different locking variants:

Our locking systems

At TENTE we distinguish between three types of locking systems: Wheel locks, directional locks and total locks.

1. The wheel lock
This type of locking only locks the wheel itself, while the swivel head is still in motion.
Application: You can use it for smaller castors, such as furniture and apparatus castors.

2. The directional lock
The directional lock sets the direction of travel of the castor and turns a swivel castor into a fixed castor. The castor can then only travel in one direction.
Application: You can use it with castors, such as hospital beds, to make straight travel easier.

3. The total lock
A total lock blocks the wheel and the swivel head at the same time. The lever is located either at the back end or at the front end of the castor.
Application: You can use it with picking trolleys, waste containers and many more. This type of locking system ensures a safe standstill when the trolley is not in use.

What is the danger of an unlocked castor?

Once a trolley starts rolling and moving, it is difficult to stop it with your own strength, especially as it can pick up speed quickly. When trying to stop a heavy and fast-moving transport trolley with physical strength, the operator may be crushed or the load on the application may fall and break. In the worst case, the load may even hit the operator. Especially in the heavy-duty sector, this scenario is beyond imagination. But even in smaller applications, such as hospital bed castors, a castor that is not fixed can have fatal consequences for the patient.

What safety aspects should be considered with castors?
Basically, the following applies: Ensure that everything is securely locked in place, even for short stops. No matter how long it takes to unload something, everyone should take the time to check everything carefully. This way, people or goods are secured. A moment of carelessness can have far-reaching consequences.

What do locking systems have to do with occupational health and safety?
Occupational health and safety are about minimising dangerous situations in the company as far as possible. This involves health hazards for employees - in our case caused by moving trolleys. For this reason, a locking system is a preventive measure to avoid these accidents at work to the greatest possible extent. With the activation of locking systems, the risk of accidents caused by moving equipment is reduced to a minimum.
