Requirements for Hospital Bed Castors
Hospital beds must move safely and predictably through busy clinical environments while carrying the combined weight of the bed, patient and attached equipment. Suitable hospital bed castors need to balance manoeuvrability, directional stability, secure positioning, quiet operation and resistance to regular cleaning.
Controlled, Low-Effort Movement
Caregivers may need to steer beds through confined rooms, around corners and along long corridors. Low rolling and swivel resistance helps reduce the force required to start, turn and position the bed. Directional stability is equally important over longer distances, particularly when one person is transporting a loaded bed.
The required load capacity must be calculated using the total weight of the bed, patient and additional equipment. Wheel diameter, castor arrangement and the selected housing and wheel configuration also influence handling.
Safe and Stable Positioning
A bed must remain securely positioned during treatment, patient transfers and routine care. The locking system should therefore be easy to reach and operate without excessive force. Depending on the bed design, central locking can allow several castors to be controlled together, while directional locks support predictable steering during transport.
Patient Comfort and Quiet Operation
Noise and vibration can disturb patients, especially during transport or at night. The wheel and tread material should support smooth, low-noise running and provide suitable damping for the floor conditions. Quiet actuation of the locking system also helps maintain a calmer clinical environment.
Hygiene and Resistance to Cleaning
Hospital bed castors are exposed to frequent cleaning and contact with disinfectants or other chemical substances. Smooth housing surfaces can make routine cleaning easier, while sealed bearings and stainless-steel components are available for configurations requiring greater resistance to moisture and dirt. Material compatibility must be checked against the cleaning procedures used at the facility.
Benefits of TENTE Hospital Bed Castors
Our hospital bed castors are available in configurations designed to support safer transport, ergonomic handling and dependable operation in healthcare environments.
Reduced Physical Effort for Caregivers
Optimised wheel geometry, precision bearings and low swivel resistance can reduce the effort needed to start and manoeuvre a hospital bed. This is particularly valuable when beds are moved frequently or transported by one caregiver.
For applications requiring additional support, an electrically driven castor can assist with starting, travelling in a straight line, manoeuvring and controlled deceleration. This can reduce physical strain when handling loaded beds or negotiating permitted inclines and declines.
More Predictable Steering
A directional lock helps stabilise the bed during straight-line movement while still supporting controlled steering around bends. When the bed reaches its destination, a total lock can secure both wheel rotation and swivel movement. The appropriate combination helps caregivers change efficiently between transport and stationary use.
Faster and More Convenient Locking
Central locking enables multiple castors to be operated using a common actuation system. This can reduce the number of individual actions required when securing or releasing a bed. Low actuation forces and adaptable switching arrangements can also make the system easier to integrate and operate.
Quieter, More Comfortable Transport
Suitable polyurethane and soft-tread wheel options can support quiet running and help absorb shocks and vibration. This contributes to patient comfort while also reducing disruptive noise in wards, treatment areas and corridors.
Easier Cleaning and Reliable Performance
Smooth surfaces reduce areas in which dirt can collect and make the castors easier to clean. Depending on the selected configuration, protective seals, sealed wheel bearings, pressed stainless-steel housings and chemical-resistant components can provide additional protection against moisture, dirt and cleaning agents.
Important Functions of Hospital Bed Castors
The correct combination of swivel, locking, wheel and drive functions allows a hospital bed to move freely when required and remain securely positioned during care.
Swivel and Directional Control
In the free-swivelling position, the wheel and housing can rotate to provide manoeuvrability in confined spaces. Activating a directional lock stabilises the swivel movement, making it easier to maintain a straight course over longer distances and control the bed around bends.
Twin-wheel castors can additionally use the differential action between the two wheels to support turning and manoeuvring.
Total and Central Locking
A total lock simultaneously blocks wheel rotation and the swivel bearing. With a central locking system, more than one castor can be controlled through an actuation lever and connecting profile bars.
Depending on the configuration, the system can provide three operating positions: free movement, directional lock and total lock. Actuation angles, brake forces and operating forces can be adapted to suit the bed design.
Wheel and Bearing Options
Precision ball bearings support low rolling and swivel resistance. Polyurethane wheels provide a hard-wearing option for frequent use, while softer tread constructions can reduce noise and vibration.
Conductive wheel versions are available for configurations that need to protect users and electrical equipment against electrostatic discharge. Sealed bearings and stainless-steel components can be selected where enhanced washability and protection against splash water, dirt or cleaning agents are required.
Electrically Assisted Movement
An electrically driven castor can provide controlled movement, powered assistance and assisted deceleration. Neutral, directional-lock and total-lock modes allow the system to support both transport and stationary use.
Integration requires a compatible bed frame, electrical supply and control system. The completed bed system must be installed, calibrated and assessed for its intended operating conditions by the manufacturer.
Hospital Bed Castor Solutions from TENTE
Integral, Integral twin and Integral assist provide three different approaches to hospital bed mobility, ranging from established single- and twin-wheel castors to electrically assisted transport. These featured series are a selection; our wider range includes additional hospital bed solutions for different designs and performance requirements.
Integral
Integral is a single-wheel castor family for hospital beds, care beds and stretchers. Depending on the configuration, it offers load capacities from 100 to 150 kg, wheel diameters from 100 to 200 mm and overall heights from 130 to 229 mm.
Precision ball bearings and optimised wheel geometry support easy manoeuvring with low pushing force. Housing options include swivel castors, central total-lock versions and configurations combining central total and directional locking. Low actuation forces help provide smooth and quiet switching.
Integral has smooth, easy-to-clean surfaces and components resistant to many cleaning agents and chemical substances. Options include pressed steel or pressed stainless-steel frames, washable configurations, sealed wheel bearings and conductive wheels. Maxtech polyurethane wheels provide a hard-wearing option, while Maxtech soft uses an extra-soft tread centre for improved shock absorption and low-vibration transport.
Integral Twin
Integral twin combines a twin-wheel design with low swivel resistance and a differential effect for controlled manoeuvring. Standard Integral twin configurations provide load capacities of 125 kg with 100 or 125 mm wheels and 150 kg with 150 mm wheels.
The series is available with swivel movement, central total locking or combined central total and directional locking. Its precision ball bearing in the swivel head supports easy steering, while the central locking system can provide free movement, directional guidance or a secure total lock.
A pressed-steel inner fork carries the main load, and optional washable versions use pressed stainless-steel housings with suitable sealed or stainless-steel bearings. Maxtech polyurethane wheels are available in standard, washable and conductive configurations. Mainly smooth surfaces and protective seals can help reduce cleaning and maintenance requirements.
Integral Assist
Integral assist is an electrically driven castor developed to support the transport of hospital beds. It is a key element of the WeAssist system but can also be integrated into other compatible bed systems.
The powered wheel assists when starting, manoeuvring and travelling in a straight line. It can also provide assisted deceleration and support movement on permitted inclines and declines. The castor has a load capacity of 150 kg, a 150 mm wheel diameter and an overall height of 150 mm. Its specified operating speed is up to 6 km/h, with inclines and slopes up to 6° under the defined operating conditions.
Integral assist provides neutral, directional-lock and total-lock modes. It operates with a supply voltage of 20–42 V DC and must be integrated with an appropriate control system. When used outside the complete WeAssist system, the bed manufacturer is responsible for installation, calibration and validation of the finished application.
